Definition
  • Organic brain syndrome
    • Acquired impairment of higher mental functioning (intellect, memory and personality)
    • Occur in alert patient
    • Usually progressive and rarely reversible
    • With impairment in performance of ADLs
  • DSM-5: Major neurocognitive disorder

Clinical Features
  • Development of multiple cognitive deficits (significant cognitive decline from previous level of functioning)
    • Complex attention
    • Executive ability (impaired judgement)
    • Learning and memory
    • Language
    • Visuo-constructional-perceptual ability (abstract thinking, apraxia, agnosia)
    • Social cognition (personality changes)
  •  Impairment in occupational and social functioning
    • Represent a decline from previous level of functioning
    • Impaired or assisted ADLs
